Out Of The Box- Innovative fast food from...well, a box.

After getting my hair cut (well, the sides and the back) at Dawn's Blue Dolphin on Spenard Road, I looked next door and there was this little fast food box, for lack of a better word. I pulled in and found out they serve all made from scratch, delicious food. The seasonings, sauces and dressings are truly creative; much better than the greasy stuff most of the other wagons offer.

I ordered tacos, three nice, non greasy beauties filled with Angus taco meat, lettuce and creamy avocado sauce. Yummy. The owners, John and Denise were so accommodating and pleasant that I went back later and had the daily special: Angus burger with smoked Provolone, Applewood smoked bacon, and mushrooms. Perfect.

They have two specials each day depending on what looks good when they shop. Big pluses are the ample sized napkins and the earth friendly, bio-degradable to-go boxes instead of the Costco- styro ones. The burgers are formed maybe an hour before their use and at what other fast food restaurant can you get items prepared with such innovation and fresh ingredients.

Looking at the menu I see burgers, chicken strips, coconut shrimp, tacos and salads. Pretty normal fast food until you see that the burgers are Angus beef, fresh flown in daily; Buffalo burgers are an option; chicken strips are dipped in buttermilk, seasoned then fried (BTW, all frying is in Safflower oil instead of the lard you may get elsewhere); shrimp is served with habanero orange marmalade (you know that isn't from a processed tub); bacon is Applewood smoked...OK,
I could go on and on but you get the idea.

Artisan food says it all. Out of the Box is here to stay hopefully. It's across Spenard Road from the now closed sushi log restaurant which is a reminder of the high "nut" involved in opening and operating a full sized restaurant. Thanks to gatherings like Spenard Food Truck Day, I think the increase of "food truck" style cuisine is upon us.

Out of the Box is at 3831 Spenard Road. Open from 11 am till 4 pm Monday thru Friday. Phone ahead or you might find a line of cars in front of you. 903-1203.

How much did each meal cost?

  2. Large salad- $5; tacos- $6; the rest around $7 - $10 for extra $2 you can add 2 more shrimp. Not outrageously priced. The specials vary each day. Try it, you'll like it.
