Bandera, American cuisine with a southwestern flair.

I've walked past Bandera so many times on visits to Scottsdale old town I've lost count. Seeing the Costco-esque rotisserie chickens cooking in the window, I thought it was a totally different kind of restaurant. Family style with lots of kids and noise. Well, when I finally looked inside was I surprised. Here is a classy bar, adjoining dining areas with deep wooden booths and many different items on the menu besides the delicious chicken.

We started with a specialty appetizer of split and grilled artichokes. They are split with the thistle removed and steamed. Then basted in garlic olive oil and mesquite grilled with remoulade sauce that is mysteriously white instead of the usual orange. Dip the leaves and scoop out the heart and Yummy.

As you can see there was not much left in the end.

I successfully duplicated this dish at home (minus the mesquite grill of course). Split and scoop out the thistle before steaming or you get a big mess.

After the artichoke feast we decided to split a combo dinner: Carolina style beef ribs and rotisserie chicken quarter. It was served with string fries and a spicy slaw.
We also added a side of slightly seared sweet peppers. The meal was plenty and we didn't need the carryout service for us or any leftovers.
