Naruto Japanese Restaurant

After driving past Naruto in the tiny mall at Minnesota and Spenard we decided to stop in and see what was what.

Naruto is a quaint little restaurant with nice modern booths, tables, and chairs. Lots of Japanese artwork and figurines all over the place.

The name Naruto is traditionally a boy's name and it is of Japanese origin. The meaning of Naruto is 'whirlpool or maelstrom'. According to Japanese legend, Naruto means a 'nine-tailed powerful mythical giantfox' or 'fox spirit'.

Everything on the menu was reasonably priced from the Ramen to the side dishes and appetizers. We started with the mandatory edamame and added pork buns which the server clarified were like dough Gyozo. Good, but I like the rice paper ones either baked or fried.

Vicki had a shrimp crunch roll: 8 big slices of crunch and some kimchi on the side. The kimchi was slightly spicy and paletable rather than the explosive, 3 mile island kind one sometimes gets at other Asian restaurants.

This is the house specialty, Naruto Udon. It has green onion, Shitake mushrooms, seaweed, fishcake, and tempura flakes on top

I opted for theTonkotsu Miso Ramen. Pork broth with miso flavor. Topped with chashu (soft cooked) pork, green onion, bean sprouts, tasty egg, and garlic flakes.

Our server talked me into adding some spicy kimchi to the ramen. Just the right amount of added heat for me.

I made my order a "Ramen Combination" by adding a Pork Katsu which is a lightly breaded pork cutlet. It was on the dry side so I wouldn't do that again.

The Ramen Combination, for a slight up-charge, can couple ramen or udon with gyoza, Chicken Katsu, Pork Katsu, California roll, spicy tuna roll or Tatsuta-age which is merely fried chicken.
