Roberto's Restaurant

Roberto's entrance

Vicki discovered Roberto's, a new Mexican American fusion restaurant in midtown.

It's at 1407 31st between Minnesota and Spenard Rd just across from the Blue Market. It's in an assisted living building, Emerald. Very modern.

Roberto's is open for lunch and early dinner, with a mainly Mexican menu plus some traditional dishes.

There is what appears to be a popular "Daily Special" menu greeting you at the entrance.
The dining area is airy and spacious with the "Nuevo, open ceiling, modern lighting, and painted ducting design. Also, there are view-of-the-kitchen windows.

The restaurant is adorned with lots of art, hanging, windowsill, and, tabletop. We found a pretty interesting art form: sculptures made by cutting and assembling scenes and figures from book pages and kept in the books.

These, along with the wall art make the restaurant into a dining-in-a-gallery experience. On the left is the elevator door with a Denali? painting and the other is a kind of macrame hanging.

More of the artwork will be later; now, on to our lunch.

Our server, Gabriella, was cordial and efficient in her bustling around preparing to-go orders as well as attending to in-house diners. She explained about the restaurant, owner/chef, Roberto, and has a real working knowledge of all the dishes they serve.

We later were introduced to owner-operator, Roberto, with whom we chatted about the food, the restaurant, and especially the catering offered for birthdays and other special events. All that is available on his website which is linked below.

Assorted Taco Platter With Jarritos Juice
We went with the Mexican motif with tacos. I had a taco platter: three assorted with rice and beans.

The meats were a choice of asada steak, chorizo, birra, al pastor, carnitas, or shrimp

The rice was authentic, and the beans were black refried—all bristling with Mexican spiciness.

Ala Carte Taco with Broccoli Cheese Soup

Vicki had an ala carte asada taco with a cup???
(bowl) of broccoli cheese soup.

The lone taco was served with a small Pico de Gallo and lettuce salad which was a nice touch.

Roberto's has a large selection of Mexican beverages including Mexican Coke, Horchata, and Jarritos juices.

We also ordered a side of Esquites which is Mexican corn flavorfully covered with mayonnaise, cotija cheese, tajin, and lime. Moist and spicy tasty.

Esquites with Salsas
You get two pics of the Esquites because of the cute mini Molcajetes in which the salsas were served.

And now back to the unique artwork. It appears that these sculpture-like pieces were razor-cut from old books. Tres chic.

They decorate the window sills and there are a couple in the ladies' room.

Roberto's is a definite revisit in my book. I want to try some of the traditional American dishes and check out the ever-changing daily special board.

Look for the six-story modern silver building on 31st Street. There is plenty of parking.

Visit Roberto's website to order online, see the entire menu with a picture tour of many dishes, and check out his catering services.

Bon appétit, mon amis.
